the brand Abingdon reveal in September 1958 a special version of its MGA substantially transformed mechanically.
This will be the animated TWIN CAM as its name suggests a dual engine camshafts head examined by the division of Morris Motors rare. This version was to be the race of the MGA release. With a compression ratio (9.9: 1 later 8.3: 1) aluminum head DOHC engine mounted on the Series B producing 108 hp (81 kW; 109 PS).
Due to problems of detonation, a version 100 hp (75 kW; 101 PS) with a lower compression rate was marketed later.
Four Dunlop disc brakes and wheels Dunlop steel central fixation butterfly (knock-off) similar to the wheels used on racing cars Jaguars, unique to the Twin-Cam. Aside from the wheels, the unique identifier outside was a "Twin-Cam" logo near the vent side of the hood.

The temperamental engine was known for warranty issues during production, and sales dropped quickly. The engine suffering from a too high compression rate.

Most known Twin Cam engine problems have been corrected with the low compression version.

Many restored Twin-Cams are more reliable than ever. The Twin-Cam was abandoned in April 1960 after 1788 units produced (323 coupe) Production ended in April 1960 (20 months of production).

A roadster was tested by Motor magazine in 1958 and a top speed of 113 mph (182 km / h), acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km / h) in 9.1 seconds and a fuel consumption 27.6 miles per imperial gallon (10.2 L / 100 km; 23.0 mpg) were recorded.
Twin-Cam managed to 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans, where T. and C. Lund ESCOTT rank 12th overall and 1st in class (with the victory, this year, was won by  O. GENDEBIEN and P.FRERE Ferrari 250 / TR).

Thus 1956 saw the entry of three nearly standard MGAs prepared by dealers in New York and driven by locals, marked the beginning of MGAs at Sebring and they quickly gained fourth, fifth and sixth in class on their first attempt. In 1960, a factory supported three car team was assembled using MGA Twin Cams upgraded with works supplied components with close ratio gearboxes, larger SU 2-inch carburettors, limited slip differentials, Vanden Plas aluminium hardtops, no bumpers, 17-gallon fuel tanks, cold air intake for the carburettors, twin driving lamps, oil coolers and wing vents to remedy high under bonnet temperatures.
