If you are lucky, you may meet her on the road or on a circuit. With a power-to-weight ratio of less than two, it is one of the fastest road-certified automobiles in the world. It has a power of 340 to 380 hp and a torque of 450 Nm from about 1600 rpm. She is much larger than her predecessors, but her weight (about 700 kilos) is barely larger and her driving is amazingly easy. Already as a prototype, it was applauded by the international automotive press, even for the most experienced Donkervoort driver, it offers an incredible sensation.
Donkervoort is synonymous with sensation, and with the GTO, this term has received a new meaning.
The new Donkervoort generation
The GTO is clearly one size bigger than its predecessors, the closed D8 GT and the open D8 270 RS. It is 35 centimeters longer and 15 centimeters wider to be precise. This was necessary to accommodate AUDI AG's 350 hp 2.5 TFSI inline five-cylinder engine, while achieving a stunning design balance. The GTO is therefore a brand new design car. According to Joop Donkervoort in person, this is the first of a new generation of Donkervoort automobiles.
Ultra light, but ultra robust
Bonding the steel tube frame to large carbon composite panels gave rise to a unique combination of rigidity (greatly increased) and ultra-light weight. The bodywork is also entirely made of carbon composite with the exclusive finding of a one-piece door (with integrated hinges) that can withstand a side impact of some 1,500 kilos and whose hinges withstand a force of over 1,100 kilos ... with a total weight of only 980 grams !! This technique comes from the aviation industry and had never been used for a car.
Motorized by Audi
The D8 GTO is equipped with an Audi engine thanks to the close cooperation that has existed since 1996 between Donkervoort and Audi AG (quattro GmbH). But the GTO is not equipped with a single Audi engine: the original sports car comes with an original sports engine. The Audi 2.5L R5 TFSI engine has a rich track record (racing) and, in a GTO, it comes with 340 or 380 hp.
Chassis and suspension of unreleased wheels
In addition, the chassis of the car has been completely redesigned, the front axle has been equipped with a brand new stabilizer bar and, to give more stability to the GTO, the construction of the rear axle has been completely redesigned.
The ARC dampers, a "smart" hydraulic system from the Dutch company Intrax, are flexible in a straight line, but remain rather stiff in turns. The remarkable comfort of the GTO is largely due to these dampers (besides the longer length, width and wheelbase)
Wheels
At Donkervoort, we try to save weight and add robustness down to the smallest detail. For example, the 17 "forged aluminum wheels specially made for Donkervoort by the Japanese brand RAYS weigh only 6 kilos each.
Extraordinary details
The GTO is riddled with extraordinary details. This is also true for the aluminum hood closures. They come from the American space industry where low weight, easy handling and a smooth finish are paramount, just like Donkervoort.
Inside
The interior of the D8 GTO reflects the true identity of the car, that of an authentic race car. The superfluous equipment has been removed in favor of a car the lightest possible and performance.
The highlight is probably the fully equipped carbon dashboard, which evokes the aeronautics thanks to its minimalist but highly technological switches. On the dashboard there is also a special switch for the racing module and a traction control button that can be adjusted according to the wishes of the driver.
The upholstery of the D8 GTO is fully adapted to the customer's wishes. With a choice of hundreds of colors, different types of leather, stitching and patterns, this is the ultimate way to further personalize your Donkervoort.
